2.5 Jesus Enters Jerusalem Describe the events of Palm Sunday Explain why Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem might have caused conflict What is the significance for Christians today?

Zachariah 9  9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you,    righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey,    on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim    and the warhorses from Jerusalem,    and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations.    His rule will extend from sea to sea    and from the River[b] to the ends of the earth. 11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,  I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. 12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;    even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you. 13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow    and fill it with Ephraim. I will rouse your sons, Zion,    against your sons, Greece,    and make you like a warrior’s sword.  14 Then the LORD will appear over them;    his arrow will flash like lightning. The Sovereign LORD will sound the trumpet;    he will march in the storms of the south,  15 and the LORD Almighty will shield them. They will destroy    and overcome with slingstones. They will drink and roar as with wine;    they will be full like a bowl    used for sprinkling[c] the corners of the altar. 16 The LORD their God will save his people on that day    as a shepherd saves his flock. They will sparkle in his land    like jewels in a crown. 17 How attractive and beautiful they will be!    Grain will make the young men thrive,    and new wine the young women. Which parts of this prophecy are relevant to Mark’s Gospel message?

Jesus Enters Jerusalem Read pages 42-43 (hyperlink) Complete activity 4 Explain how Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem led to conflict (8) Why is this passage significant for Christians today? (8) Do you think Jesus was right to enter Jerusalem in the way he did on Palm Sunday? Give two reasons for your point of view. (4) What can you interpret from this passage? Jesus rides on a donkey not war horse because he enters the city in peace. This shows he is the Messiah and fulfils the prophecies. The crowd welcomed Jesus. He was popular which worried the authorities. This is celebrated on Palm Sunday. Christians give out palm crosses and re-enact the procession. “Jesus deliberately caused conflict with the authorities” Do you agree (3) Why would some disagree with you? (3)

Explain how Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem led to conflict (8) Popularity- Frightened the Jewish leaders Claiming to be the Messiah- Upset Jewish leaders Could have been seen as a threat to the Romans Claimed to be the Messiah but had no intention of getting rid of the Romans People were calling him “Saviour” by shouting Messiah.- this would seem a threat to Jewish leaders. Why is this passage significant for Christians today? (8) Jesus is the Messiah- he was recognised by the people He fulfilled the Prophecy He is pure- symbolised by the donkey- unridden He is the Son of God- miracle of the colt Jesus rides on a donkey not war horse because he enters the city in peace. This is celebrated on Palm Sunday. Christians give out palm crosses and re-enact the procession.
