ACROSS THE SAND TO THE HOLY LAND! Pope Urban II called for the recapture of the Holy Land to reclaim Jerusalem and stop Muslim aggression; to heal the rift between Roman and Orthodox Church and to marshal the energy of the constantly warring feudal lords and knights in Europe. People joined for adventure, religious appeal, and riches. In addition, the Church offered forgiveness of sins, and freedom from debts, taxes and serfdom. Jews were caught in the middle of these battles. Many were slaughtered by greedy Crusaders. In 1096 French and German peasants went on a Crusade where they massacred Jews they came across while marching through Europe. (Peasant Crusade) Those who undertook the venture were to wear an emblem in the shape of a red cross on their body. And so derived the word "Crusader," from the Latin word crux - to mark with a cross. . Europeans Christians traveled to the Holy Land Jerusalem – birthplace of Christ. Muslim leaders began harassing and killing these pilgrims and destroying. 1095-1291

Your shield must include: Name and year of crusade Notable person involved & why they are involved Symbol to represent it Slogan of those who participated in it (created-based on facts or real) Perspective-criticize this crusade from another perspective (ex: if written from Christian then how would Jews or Muslims feel about this crusade) Lastly-was the crusade a success? You must use evidence when completing each requirement and at least on key term per requirement (6)
