. . . a brief presentation . . . an open discussion 4 September 2008 Sampling Event Log . . . a brief presentation . . . an open discussion 4 September 2008 Rolling Deck to Repository

What is a sampling event log? a chronological record of all instrument sampling events during a cruise, wherein each sampling event is assigned a unique identifier other definitions?

Why is an event log important? the unique sampling event identifier helps to integrate observations from discrete data sets Example: CTD station 4 cast 2 is assigned event number 20080904.1342 … the Niskin bottle nutrient data and pigment data from that cast can be integrated using that event number

Reminder RD2R is a pilot project test out some approaches to creating a digital file of shipboard sampling events and making that file available after the cruise or earlier if advantageous and possible

some design considerations ideally we test out several systems already in use by various operators interface should be intuitive system must be flexible; certain aspects should be easily customized by operator information ‘entry’ should be automated where possible (from ship’s network) system must scale – smaller coastal vessels to larger open ocean research vessels

thoughts from the high seas . . . * researcher aboard R/V Oceanus, August 2008, talking about metadata for shipboard sampling "I feel like I'm so busy with all the other little things in a cruise that I don't have time to worry about making up log sheets. But if someone puts an already made log sheet in front of me, I'll use it." "When I see projects with good metadata, it just makes my heart go pitter patter." Data originators recognize that recording metadata is a good idea, and they will even record metadata ~ if we make it easy for them to do so.

important event log entries? what types of information are important to record in the event log the unique sampling event identifier Example: YYYYMMDD.hhmm SCYYMMDD.hhmm (SC=ship code)
