An airplane is a pickup/delivery system The Circulatory System is a pick up and delivery system Picks Up: ? Delivers: ?

Long thought to be the center of passion and love, the heart is only the world’s greatest ... Pump!

About the size of a large fist, the heart is a muscle with 5 large blood vessels carrying blood to and from the body. Major Blood Vessels Muscle

The heart is divided into 4 chambers: Left Atrium Right Atrium Left Ventricle Right Ventricle

The right side receives dirty blood from the body and sends it to the lungs, kidneys, and liver(the cleaners). The left side receives clean blood from the lungs and sends it to the body.

In between each atrium and its ventricle are one -way valves. One-way valves also open out of the ventricles to blood vessels.

Your heart has been beating since before you were born and will beat until the day you die. Blood flow of the Heart

because they only pump blood down to Atria have thin walls because they only pump blood down to ventricles. Ventricles have thick walls because they pump blood out of the heart. Left ventricle pumps all over the body. Right ventricle pumps to the lungs.

The heartbeat is controlled by electricity from the nervous system and hormones from the endocrine system.

carry blood throughout the body. Blood does not leave the vessels. Blood Vessels are ...tubes that carry blood throughout the body. Blood does not leave the vessels.

Types of Blood Vessels Arteries- carries blood away from heart. Thick walls and have a pulse. Veins- brings blood in to heart. Thin walls, but have one-way valves.

Blood Vessel Types(cont.) Capillaries- very small, thin blood vessels. Oxygen, food, wastes, and other substances pass in and out of the capillaries. Every cell in your body touches a capillary!

5 liters of blood continually pump around the 60,000 miles of blood vessels in your body, picking up and delivering your daily needs.

Blood, the fluid of life is really....

... a clear yellowish liquid with red particles floating in it!

Blood is produced in bone marrow- the center of long bones

Parts of Blood Plasma- clear, nonliving liquid part of blood. 55% of blood. Carries food, wastes, salt, and chemicals. Plasma

Parts of Blood carry O2 and CO2. 43% of blood. Red Blood Cells- carry O2 and CO2. 43% of blood. contains hemoglobin- iron substance that carries the O2 and CO2. Red Blood Cells

Parts of Blood White Blood Cells- fight infections. 1% of blood. larger cells with nucleus. Platelets- start blood clotting. 1% of blood.

Blood Cells Plasma Red Blood Cells Platelets WhiteBlood Cells

Blood Types There are 4 main types of blood: A, O, B and AB. What makes them different is the kinds of proteins found on the cell membrane of their red blood cells. Why blood type is important?- Mixing the wrong types of blood together can cause clotting, health problems and possible death.

the Circulatory System... ... travels to all parts of the body carrying digested food, oxygen and other nutrients to our body cells. It also picks up wastes from the body cells.
