Recruitment and retention Wrap Up Lee Bone & Janice Bowie

It’s Your Turn… In light of the presentations from Drs. Miller and Wallington, what are some of your questions that have not been discussed? What are the struggles and challenges that you’ve encountered with recruitment and retention? Do you have innovative and effective strategies that can be shared that helped overcome the problems with R&R? How well do you feel you know the populations/patients that you serve or are recruiting from? Describe concretely what you’ve done to accomplish this? Assuming that community engagement is beneficial to R & R, what do you see as some ethical considerations associated with this work?

Strengthening Community Engagement: Our Perspective Decide on communication strategies: email, webpages, meetings, social media Review and adapt/adopt best practices based on the identified “community” (e.g., collaborate with other CTSAs, n=60+) Build on existing work (e.g., infrastructure, engagement strategies, interventions, evaluation, dissemination, and implications for practice and policy) Provide opportunities to maximize strengths [of individuals and networks]

Strengthening Community Engagement cont. Maintain a focus on the end-users of research initiatives Continue to plan for dissemination and sustainability as well as maintaining an environment for creativity Provide incentives where possible (financial and recognition/awards) Use appropriate technology/social media to maintain engagement Keep ethical considerations in the forefront Be mindful of the importance of the “Glue” Relationships (ever expanding, inclusive, and meaningful commitment) Leadership (organizing, visionary) Program champions
