MBWA – WG20 12. Scope of Proposed Project Specification of physical and medium access control layers of an air interface for interoperable mobile broadband wireless access systems, operating in licensed bands below 3.5 GHz, optimized for IP-data transport, with peak data rates per user in excess of 1 Mbps. It supports various vehicular mobility classes up to 250 Km/h in a MAN environment and targets spectral efficiencies, sustained user data rates and numbers of active users that are all significantly higher than achieved by existing mobile systems. 13. Purpose of Proposed Project: To enable worldwide deployment of cost effective, spectrum efficient, ubiquitous, always-on and interoperable multi-vendor mobile broadband wireless access networks. To provide an efficient packet based air interface optimized for IP. The standard will address end user markets that include access to Internet, intranet, and enterprise applications by mobile users as well as access to infotainment services.

PAR extract 18. Additional Explanatory Notes: {Item Number and Explanation} Additional Information for Item 12. As stated in item 12, the standard to be developed "targets spectral efficiencies, sustained user data rates and numbers of active users, which are all significantly higher than those achieved by existing mobile communications systems". The table below provides additional information on air interface characteristics and performance targets that are expected to be achieved.

5 Criteria – Currently contained in 11-02-799r0 6.1 Broad Market Potential A standards project authorized by IEEE 802 shall have a broad market potential. Specifically, it shall have the potential for: a) Broad sets of applicability. b) Multiple vendors and numerous users. c) Balanced costs (LAN versus attached stations).   Demand for WLANs is expected to grow at a 50% Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over the next five years. Over 50% of all home networking connections and over 40% of all mobile PC network connections will be over WLAN by 2005. New usages such as simultaneous transmission of multiple HDTV signals, audio, on-line gaming, etc. will drive the need for higher throughput in the home. As usage increases in the corporate and other high density environments, bandwidth restrictions of a shared media will begin to be realized. This is very similar to what happened in the wired Ethernet market. The need for higher throughput drove switching and 100Base-TX adoption. While a switching technology would ultimately be desired for WLAN, this is not technically feasible. The next logical step is to increase the data throughput of each WLAN Connection.

It is expected that the majority of those vendors, and others, will participate in the standards development process and subsequent commercialization activities. c) WLAN equipment is accepted as having balanced costs. The addition of High Throughput capabilities will not disrupt the established balance.
