INFERRING ABOUT SETTING Unit 1: Freak the Mighty

SETTING PUT THIS IN YOUR LA NOTEBOOK! DEFINITION: THE PLACE OR TYPE OF SURROUNDINGS WHERE SOMETHING IS POSITIONED OR WHERE AN EVENT TAKES PLACE.

SETTING NOW WE ARE GOING TO READ A SECTION OF TEXT FROM HARRY POTTER. THIS SECTION DESCRIBES THE SETTING OF HOGWARTS. WHILE WE READ, JOT DOWN SOM ENOTES ABOUT HOW J.K. ROWLING DESCRIBES THE SETTING.

HARRY POTTER – HOGWARTS SETTING There were a hundred and forty-two staircases at Hogwarts: wide sweeping ones; narrow, rickety ones; some that led somewhere different on a Friday; some with vanishing step halfway up that you had to remember to jump. Then there were doors that wouldn’t open unless you asked politely, or tickled them in exactly the right place, and doors that weren’t doors at all, but solid walls just pretending. It was also very hard to remember where everything was, because it all seemed to move around a lot. The people in the portraits kept going to visit each other and Harry was sure the coats of armour could walk.

HARRY POTTER – HOGWARTS SETTING NOW, MAKE AN INFERENCE FOR HOW THE SETTING OF THE HOGWARTS CASTLE COULD IMPACT THE STORY.

SETTING NEXT WE WILL WATCH A PIXAR SHORT CALLED “LAVA”. TAKE NOTES ON THE SETTING AND HOW IT CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE VIDEO. WE WILL WATCH IT TWICE.

SETTING VIDEO

SETTING WHILE WE READ FROM FREAK THE MIGHTY, THINK ABOUT HOW THE AUTHOR IS DESCRIBING THE SETTING AND HOW THE SETTING INTERACTS WITHT THE PLOT.
