Stem and Leaf Structures

Xylem Tubelike structures that carry water from the roots to the rest of the plant Made of specialized long, thin cells stuck end to end The water transportation system for most land plants

Vascular System A vascular system transports water throughout a plant and the leaves regulate the flow of water through a plant.

Stomates Structures that look like little mouths on leaves Pores (openings) in the leaves that can open and close Most stomates are found on the bottom of leaves Control water leaving the plant

Guard Cells Cells around the stomates Control the size of the opening

Think about it questions Why would most stomates be found on the bottom of the leaf? Why are the stomates on a wilted leaf closed?
