A Practical Case Study of Remote Lecture between Japan and Korea Koji OKAMURA Kyushu University oka@ec.kyushu-u.ac.jp

Background of Distance Learning of Kyushu Univ. Kyushu University is one of big University of Kyushu Island and west area of Japan. There are enough (Too many) Professors against Students. ★ Many professors are interesting in Distance Learning technologies itself rather than practice purpose.

Case Studies of Distance Learning We have enough bandwidth between Japan and Korea, i.e. 1Gbps. KJCN, Genkai It is very interesting in What happens on distance learning between Japan and Korea with Advanced Media (DV) for technical view.

Case Studies Remote Lecture of Graduate School (M1) 2 times (10th and 17th Feb 2003) Remote Lecture of Flesh man (B1) 6 times (The 1st Semester of 2003) Both of these were done in regular classes time Practical Classes not a just Remote Lecture as an event.

1. Distance Learning for Graduate School Distributed System Graduate School 90min Contents of Lecture one or two Student(s) have presentation of RFC or ID Implementation application based on the documents Q&A 2 times (the last 2 of semester)

System Configuration Bi-connection Communication with DV class quality Kyushu U HYU MCU Video/Audio Mixer CNU KOREN NOC

Result of this Distance Learning IP Multicast didn’t work well. DV quality is enough for this lecture. Many Q & A were occurred and gave more deep understanding to both students.

2.Distance Lecture for Fresh man Flesh men(B1) came to my lab on every Tuesday for one semester. They enjoyed talking with foreigner researchers/ students with DVTS. Koren researchers cooperated with this lecture very much.

List of Korean Partners Korea Univ(Seoul) Chonnan Univ.(Gwangju) KJIST(Gwangju) KOREN NOC(Daejon) Korea Univ.(Seoul) HyongHee Univ(Swan)

Tools in the Remote Class DVTS Echo Canceller just point to point WIDE (HDTV) Display Audio Quality was almost perfect.

Contents of Lecture Students had communication with Korean freely. What kind sports do you like? Do you know BOA? Do you like Japanese Foods? Are there Convenience Stores in Korea?

Results Students looks like they never enjoyed. Conversation didn’t rise so much. But after lecture they had a presentation about this lecture, They said, this lecture was very exciting. Current Kyushu Univ. needs not distance learning seriously but this experimentation said distance learning gives students something good effects.

Consideration On Connam Univ’s turn, a Korean student can speak Japanese very well. this removes the wall of language. Even this, Conversation didn’t rise so much. Almost the same as English conversation. Language has no relation with lecture’s quality.

Future Plan Once more of Distance Learning for Graduate School in regular classes. Distributed System one or two Student(s) have presentation of RFC or ID Implementation application based on the documents all of this year’s second semester 1 class/Week (10-12 classes in a semester) every week Korean students also have their presentations.

A Topics of Kyushu Univ. Current Campus New Campus 20Km Fukuoka APAN All of main campus of Kyushu Univ moves from 2005. It takes about 10 years. The place for New Campus is very in-convenience. Remote Lecture is mandatary.

Conclusion 2 reports of remote lectures with Korea Remote lecture may have a possibility of good effects for students even if it does not give enough knowledge to students. Language is not so important rather than contents of the class. We will have more remote education case studies and considerations. It might be useful for our moving.
