How do you describe a “people”? Everything you can say about a group of people is their 'culture’. Socialisation is the process that people become part of a culture. Bronfenbrenner's approach is a way of describing / Defining a culture

These days some people think pop culture is the way you describe people these days… There is much more but pop culture is a major signpost… Pop Culture

What’s in and what’s out? In trying to determine what Pop Culture is and isn’t, let’s attempt to classify these objects...

Defining Pop Culture Popular Culture: noun 1. cultural activities or commercial products reflecting, suited to, or aimed at the tastes of the general masses of people. Also called pop culture. popular culture. Dictionary.com. Dictionary.com Unabridged. Random House, Inc. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/popular culture (accessed: February 19, 2015). All forms of culture that have been popularised into entertainment or fashion and embraced, as such, by large and significant segments of a population. Rubinfeld How does this fit with Bronfenbrenner’s approach?

‘Pop Culture’ as opposed to... High culture Vs Low culture “High culture refers to the idea that some artistic and literary products in our society are superior in scope and form to others. An example here might be that classical music is held in higher cultural esteem than “popular music”... Low culture , therefore, refers to cultural products and pursuits characterised by their production for, and consumption by, "the masses". At various times, low cultural forms have included films, comics, television, magazines such as...?” (Livesy and Lawson) Other definitions push Low culture further (pulp fiction, reality TV etc) and have Pop culture as the intersection between the two where most interest comes to lie. High and Low - Are these still valid terms? Why or why not?

What we do with pop culture Individuation – To form identity OR To act as signposts to your identity either by what you include or reject–– record collection etc Tribalism – which these days is fragmented, splintered People are a part of tribes and sub tribes and sub sub tribes… From Rubinfeld Are there others?
