The sea is ancient Greece Click me Homer is a blind poet from the Dorian or Greek Dark Ages (1100 to 700 BCE/BC) who tells us about the Greeks and the Sea Homer tell us of a two part epic about the sea Iliad– The hero travels to the Trojan war by boat Odyssey – The hero tries to travel home by boat This ancient tale shows the strong ties of the Greeks to the sea.

The benefits of living by the sea Click Here Allows for the cultural diffusion of Hellenic (Greek) civilization to Egypt Fosters a seafaring and trading tradition (exemplified in Homer’s poems) Leads to a change from a barter economy to a monetary based economy Leads to the development of naval power (Athenian Navy)
