Science: Past, Present, Future Introducing… From the People at the Laser Jet Pod… Science: Past, Present, Future By: Josh Vorick, Jacob Spartz, and Danny Johnson

Jacob Spartz War: What is it Good For? Since the start of time, people have wondered what lies beyond our world. People have been fascinated with the concept of space and what it’s like. By now everyone here knows we’ve been to the moon and we’re exploring millions of miles from the earth right now. But, how did we get to this point; how did we get to these capabilities? That’s what my project is about. I’m examining how rockets became such a part of our everyday lives from World War 2. When WW2 ended, the space age began, and that didn’t just “happen.” The U.S. and Soviet Union took former German scientists, and my project examines their influence on us into present day.

Danny Johnson A Quantum Conundrum All throughout history, the human race has longed to communicate in a faster and more efficient way. Thanks to Einstein’s theory of relativity, nothing moves faster than the speed of light. Using the basic properties of light, including polarization, information can be transmitted in a new, unique way. With a predetermined way to decode the sent data, several people can communicate at long distances without laying countless miles of fiber optic cables. This can be achieved by orientating tiny quanta of light, called photons, vertically or horizontally. With this predetermined key, the people at the receiving end are able to interpret the sent photons into an answer. In this way, people will be able receive sent information at the speed of 300,000,000 meters per second.

SUPER ULTRA MEGA ENERGY Josh Vorick SUPER ULTRA MEGA ENERGY With carbon emissions becoming a larger threat, scientists expect us to lower emissions by 90% in 2050 to prevent drastic global changes. In order to do this we must find a new, cleaner source of energy. I believe it is the Liquid Fluoride Thorium Reactor. I plan on explaining the benefits of the LFTR as opposed to Uranium based reactors to spread knowledge and support for the future of energy. I also plan on explaining why we aren’t already using LFTRs today. If possible I will look further into the possibility of LFTRs being used to power submarines, 3rd world countries, and even moon colonies.
