HYDROLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF RIVER YAMUNA

INTRODUCTION… As we all know, Yamuna River from Delhi to Agra is considered as ‘Dead River’. All the nearby industries throw their effluents in the river without treating them. It affects its: pH value Visibility of river water Surrounding air temperature Surrounding vegetation So, how these factors are affected because of Yamuna River water, I had done some research over 5 months.

METHOD OF RESEARCH… I had researched over these 4 factors with the help of instruments given by my teacher. pH value: To measure pH value of river water, I had taken some pH strips. Visibility of river water: To check to how much depth river can be seen clearly, I had used the visibility disk and tied it with a rope with nodes at every 05 centimeters. Surrounding air temperature: To measure temperature, I had used the thermometer. Surrounding vegetation: I had just seen the type of vegetation. All the readings are taken between 11:00am to 12:00pm IST time intervals so as to take air temperature correct.

Air temperature (degree celsius) Surrounding Vegetation RESULTS… Date pH value Visibility (cm) Air temperature (degree celsius) Surrounding Vegetation 07.08.2016 12 10 32 Bushes 21.08.2016 13 15 31 04.09.2016 18.09.2016 30 02.10.2016 28 16.10.2016 11 29 06.11.2016 22 20.11.2016 23 04.12.2016 20 18.12.2016

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO RESEARCH OVER YAMUNA RIVER? River Yamuna is the second longest river of India. And also it is an important tributary river of River Ganga. All the farmers of the area through which River Yamuna flows, depend on it for agricultural purposes. Moreover, River Yamuna is of utmost importance for North Indian people. That’s why the pollution of River Yamuna is also becoming a National problem.

CONCLUSIONS… Since it has high pH value and also very low visibility, it should be cleaned so that its condition can be improved. There should be improvement in sewage treatment methods and also effluents should be treated before disposal in river water. Also, Government of India had started Yamuna Action Plan (YAP) for improving the conditions of River Yamuna.
