How to Use Sensory Words

Sensory Language Sensory language are words that writers use to describe things to appeal to your five senses. When sensory language is used we are able to better understand what is being described.

Showing vs. Telling Instead of just telling their readers something, writers use sensory words to show them!

Sensory words are words that remind us of our five senses: -sight -sound -smell -touch -taste

What are examples of sensory words for sight? -shiny -gigantic -colorful -muscular

What are examples of sensory words for sound? -banging -ringing -screeching -gushing

What are examples of sensory words for smell? -fishy -flowery -musty -rotten - sweet

What are examples of sensory words for touch? -fluffy -bumpy -smooth -silky

What are examples of sensory words for taste? -bitter -juicy -spicy -crunchy

Let’s look at this statement: In the morning while I eat my oatmeal I can smell the scent of toast coming from our toaster.

Think about how it might sound if sensory words were used in different places: In the chilly morning while I eat my warm and gooey oatmeal I can smell the sweet scent of cinnamon raisin toast coming from our tiny, tin toaster.

Make a practice Chart- Sensory Imagery Item #: See Hear Taste Touch Smell 1   2 3 4 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

How can you describe this picture using sensory details???
