How to use culture more in the classroom?

The problem Culture is often considered less important when students study language. Often the focus of language learning is on grammar not context. Generally teachers focus more on facts and structure than deeper meaning.

The Solution Begin with culture. Use the language to discover it: through role plays, etc.

An example What do you see in the picture? (Description) Can you tell me where this picture was taken? (Analysis) What if anything makes this picture French? (Comparison) http://www.boulangerie-les-arcades.ch/magasin.html

Make a role play based on the picture. What are they saying?
