Architectural Drafting Equipment Chapter 3 Architectural Drafting Equipment

Today vs. Yesterday Manual drafting Term used to describe traditional pencil or ink drafting Tools and equipment Scales Template Computer Software Mouse (2 Button w/ scroll)

Deliverables Manual drawings Computer-aided drawings Prepared on precut drafting sheets Contain printed graphic designs for company logo and information, borders, and title blocks Computer-aided drawings Created using a template Contains a border, title block, and graphic designs for the company Stored in files and reproduced on media

Scales Used for: Scale notation: Making measurements Establishing dimensions Drawing features at reduced size Scale notation: Usually noted on title block or below the view differing in scale

Scales (cont’d.) Types: Metric scale Architects scale Millimeter is commonly used Architects scale Contains 11 different scales Civil engineer’s scale Commonly used to draw site plans, maps, or subdivision plats or to read existing land documents

Architect’s Scale - 11 different scales Locate the correct scale before beginning Ten of the scales are based on the inch unit Other scale is divided into 1/16th of an inch Be careful to watch reading direction 1/4”=1’-0” Residential 1/8”=1’-0” Commercial

Engineer’s Scale - 6 different scales Can be identical or different units 1”=20’ Common for ¼ Acre or less 1”=30’ Common for ½ Acre

Factors to Determine Scale: Actual size of structure Amount of detail to be shown Paper size selected Amount of dimensions and notes needed Common practices (company) DH uses 1/8”=1’-0” because print on 11” x 17” Ivory uses 1/4”=1’-0” because use Arch C 24” x 36”

Scales Overview Civil Calculating Scale Factors: 1unit :1 unit Changing Units Goal: Decimal Feet Architectural ¼” = 1’-0” Goal: Feet and Inches Calculating Scale Factors: ¼”=1’-0” 3/16”=1’0” 1:2=_______________ 1:4=_______________ 2:1=_______________

Application Exercise Architects vs. Civil
