WEEK #1: GETTING STARTED

AND…..We’re off! 6 weeks 38 days 7 days a week

COMMENCEMENT All material for Week #1 is under the “Commencement” page. It is also duplicated under the “Course Documents” page.

WELCOME STATEMENT First, if you have not already done so, watch the “Learn Orientation.” Then read the “Welcome Statement” under the link on this page: A copy is also under “Course Documents.”

ACADEMIC HONESTY Next, read the “Academic Honesty Policy.” Then take the “Academic Honesty Quiz” linked under this icon: Both of these items appear on the bottom of this “Commencement” page.

ACADEMIC HONESTY ALL quizzes will be linked under the ASSESSMENT tab in the Course Menu tool bar, at the left of the screen:

RETURN to the PAGE Then return to the “Commencement” page: Click on the word “Commencement” in the bread crumbs in the middle of the screen OR go back through the Course Content (homepage) page on the menu bar at left.

COURSE DOCUMENTS Once back to the “Commencement” page Read the other Course Documents -- Syllabus House Rules Class Schedule Essay Basics

CLASS SCHEDULE The “Class Schedule” is duplicated under the following pages: Commencement Course Documents Schedule Each page contains the same file, the same information.

CLASS SCHEDULE Here’s a screen shot of a typical calendar-class schedule page: In this last column, you will find what’s due and on what day it’s due for each week

TURNITIN.COM Now, set up your account on Turnitin.com. UNFORTUNATELY, the English Department has decided to DROP its Tii subscription. SO…. You do NOT have to set up an account. You do NOT have to submit your papers there too. Please IGNORE any reference to it throughout the course. Now, set up your account on Turnitin.com. The directions sheet is also under the “Commencement” page “Course Documents” page Both our Class ID and our Enrollment Code are on the directions sheet. You won’t be able to create an account w/o them.

WEEK #1 QUIZ After reading all the COURSE DOCUMENTS Take the Week #1 Quiz which basically confirms you have read and understood that important material As with all quizzes, access it under the ASSESSMENTS tab in the Course Menu (at left)

ESSAYS All essays will be submitted to the “Assignment Drop Box” in Learn. This is the ASSIGNMENTS tab in the Course Menu at left Assessments = Quizzes Assignments = Essays Please Note: Use WORD files only (.doc, .docx) NO Open Office or Google Docs

DISCUSSION GROUPS Open the “Discussion Groups” page through its Course Menu link:

DISCUSSION GROUPS Read the links on Etiquette and Directions. These files also appear on the “Course Documents” page and the “Week #1” page.

DISCUSSION GROUPS Each topic is listed in order. Each topic has its own set of instructions for each task.  directions topic

DISCUSSION GROUPS These postings are the “homework” for the course and are synonymous with journals and activities and exercises. Generally speaking, these assignments are journals; thus, they are concise, insightful one-page documents (unless otherwise noted) and the NOT 3-4-page essays If you are unsure of the directions for a particular posting, please ask me. one-page documents (unless otherwise noted) and the NOT 3-4-page essays

DISCUSSION GROUPS Once you have read the Discussion Groups Etiquette & General Directions, you will post your first one: “DG #1: Process Essay Topic & Outline” This concerns the 1st essay Process Essay, due Friday by 11am The directions for this are next to that topic.

DISCUSSION GROUPS One of the reasons I chose the Discussion Groups format is that students can read each other’s postings to get some idea of what is going on. That’s “read,” not “copy.” Academic Honesty! You can “discuss” ideas with each other by replying to a post, very much as you would reply to an email. You can also check (not copy) homework to see how accurate your answers are. The DG page allows students an opportunity to communicate and commiserate. Having said all that, I remain the authority on all matters, so ask ME if you are lost or if you have questions.

GRAMMAR We’ll spend the first few weeks on grammar For Week #1, you have a Pre-Diagnostic due under “Assessments” For Weeks #1-4, you’ll have grammar Readings & Exercises to complete Readings = in the LBE book Exercises = on Grammar Bytes site self-grading *must achieve at least 70* Quizzes = by Monday 11am *Work on these Monday through Friday; take the related QUIZZES by midnight Sunday.
