Simon, President, Michigan State University EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED RESEARCH IN MICHIGAN An NSF-funded researcher at the University of Michigan designed a new type of concrete that bends under stress. In addition to better withstanding earthquakes, the concrete is self-healing from damage caused by weather and chemicals, and uses 40 percent less energy to produce. Researchers at Michigan State University’s Kellogg Biological Station, part of NSF’s Long Term Ecological Research Network, found that increasing native plant cover in agricultural landscapes could save Upper Mid-West farmers $58 million a year in reduced losses from soybean aphids. These pests represent the biggest threat to soybean production in the U.S. Researchers at the NSF-supported Center for Ultrafast Optical Science and the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center transformed corrective eye surgery by using a laser in the procedure. Since this innovation, hundreds of thousands of people have had LASIK surgery. Michigan Since 1952, NSF has supported nearly 50,000 graduate students through research fellowships. Michigan received $27 million in NSF educational funding in FY 2016. THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION (NSF) not only funds cutting-edge research at institutions across the country; NSF’s education initiatives ensure the U.S. will remain a global leader in innovation for generations to come. EXAMPLES OF NSF-FUNDED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN MICHIGAN More than 550 high school students have learned about nanotechnology through a workshop developed by Michigan Technological University. The workshops are taught by undergraduate students, who inspire their peers’ interest in nano science and technology. Participants in the NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates at Hope College receive mentoring from scientists while working on an interdisciplinary research project. The program is focused on recruiting minority and 2-year college students into scientific careers. The NSF-funded Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program at Eastern Michigan University trains new science, technology, engineering, and math teachers for high-need urban schools. The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University offers a summer program that exposes 7th and 8th grade students to college science courses.
