About the Bahamas The Bahamas, are located in the Atlantic Ocean; southeast of the United States; and north of the Caribbean . It’s capital is Nassau.
Geography and Climate The climate of the Bahamas is tropical. It’s very dangerous in the summer and fall because of the hurricanes that pass near the islands. The highest point in the country is Mount Alvernia.
Economy The Bahamas is an upper middle-income developing country. Tourism is their main economic activity. Offshore finance is the second largest industry. The government continues to promote tourism and financial services.
Culture Regattas are the biggest social event in the Bahamas. Some places have festivals associated with the traditional food of that area, like the "Pineapple Fest" in Gregory Town, or the "Crab Fest" in Andros. Sailing, Track and Field, Football, and Rugby are popular sports in the country.
Government The Bahamas is an independent nation. Legislative power is vested into a bicameral parliament, which has 41-members, these members are elected from districts, and a 16-member Senate, nine of which are from the prime minister, four from the leader of the opposition, and three from the prime minister. The House of Assembly carries out all major legislative functions.
Districts The districts of the Bahamas give the people a system of local government except for New Providence whose are handled by a central government. A few of these districts are Berry Islands, Cat Island, and San Salvador.
