Gathering Blue Chapter 2 By:Brendan Geissel, Connor Corso, Massimo Garcia-Astolfi, Matt Goll, and Julianne Esposito

Setting by Massimo Garcia In the novel Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry, young Kira already has nothing left because of the society that she is in. From hints and clues, it is obvious that this setting is in the future. In this society, as you get older, you gain a syllable for your name, and if your relative dies of sickness, their house gets burnt down. Also, there is the beasts if you are not needed from the town, they will execute you. In my eyes this is a dystopian society because the citizens are ruthless and out for Kira. Edited By: Brendan Geissel

Characters by Julianne Esposito Kira- Kira is a young adolescent born with a twisted leg. Her mother, Katrina, died with a disease and her house was burned down. Her father, Christopher, was taken by the beasts before she was born. Even though it is hard for her to walk, she is skilled at threading with her hands. She now has to rebuild her life with what she now has left. Vandara- Vandara is a tall, muscular women who is not afraid of anything and she always gets her way. Her courage is represented with her scar going down her neck to her shoulder.

Theme By Matt Goll One theme of the book Gathering Blue, by Lois Lowry is that disadvantages can’t hold you down. Kira overcomes many struggles like the community trying to stone her, just over a crippled leg. What they don’t realize is that she is the most talented threader in the community. Another theme of this novel so far is,in my opinion, that you should put yourself in someone else’s shoes. The fact that Vandara ganged up a group to stone Kira, and Kira gets out of it, shows her mental strength. Vandara never thought about what it would feel like to be Kira, alone in the society. Kira convinces the citizens to not stone her because she told them that whoever stoned her would be sentenced to death.

Quotes by Connor Corso by Connor Corso “The ragged scar that marked her chin and continued down her her neck to her broad shoulders was said to be a remnant of a long-ago battle with one of the forest creatures,” (Lowry 17). Vandara is feared and respected throughout the community because they know that she has suffered a great deal of pain and defeated a beast. “ Remember that if conflict is not taken to the Council of Guardians, and there is a death … The causer-of-death must die,” (Lowry 20). Kira outsmarts Vandara in this case because she thinks of a rule that Vandara does not which changes everyones’ mind. by Connor Corso

GAME Sticky Notes... can you build a master house? Or will you get crushed by the guardians... Answer questions, if you get them right, build your empire (1 building). If you don’t, you must go to the Field. NO BOOKS to answer questions! Each question is worth 1 sticky note. By: Brendan Geissel

Questions 1. Why is Vandara so feared and respected in the community? 2. How does Kira convince the women of the community to not follow Vandara in her idea to stone Kira? ( What does Kira use) 3. Describe Kira. What are some of her strengths that compare to her weaknesses? 4. What do the women of the community want to do with Kira’s land and Kira herself? Explain. 5. What food Katrina and Kira? by Connor Corso, Brendan Geissel, and edited by Julianne Esposito

Answers Vandara is feared and respected in the community because she is said to have battled a beast, and survive a cut that is on her throat. The women of the community are convinced by Kira not to stone her and not to follow Vandara’s actions because the rule of the community is the causer of the death will be killed if not brought to the Council Of Guardians. She uses her smarts of knowing the rules of the community to maybe live. Kira is a girl with two syllables, an outstanding weaver and has a twisted leg at birth which makes her life harder in walking and standing. Her strengths in threading compensate for her weakness walking and her twisted leg because she may be accepted in the community because of her threading. The woman of the community wanted to get rid of Kira entirely and take her land so they could make a pen for their tykes. They wanted to get rid of Kira because she was made an exception for at birth because of her twisted leg. Katrina and Kira could only eat vegetables from their garden and an occasional small creature because the man of the family got taken by beasts and the women can not go in the wild. by Connor Corso, Brendan Geissel and edited by Julianne Esposito
