The Conservative Movement Begins

I. Liberal choices of the 1960’s and 1970’s Entitlement Programs-guaranteed benefits to particular groups -ex.-welfare, social security, veteran’s pensions -By 1980, over $300 billion annually = too high!

B. Movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s (women, minorities)were too extreme for some -led to affirmative actions policies-hiring of women and minorities to show non- discrimination -was the best candidate hired?

II. The Opposition strikes back New Right-small groups fighting against single liberal issues -ex-Abortion, court-ordered busing, school prayer -fought against affirmative action with reverse discrimination- favoring a group based on gender or race

III. Conservatives unite!! Conservative Coalition-a united group of those upset with liberal policies -business leaders (overtaxed) -disaffected democrats (against movements of the 1970’s) -Moral Majority-evangelical Christians wanting more traditional values brought back to our nation

B. Goals for the 1980 election Decrease the size of the federal government and deregulate industry. Decrease taxes for all! Strengthen the national defense Promote family values Which ends up leading to this guy!
