What is a sentence?

A sentence has a subject, a predicate, and expresses a complete thought.

Subject The mouse

Subject + Predicate The mouse ran

Subject+Predicate+Complete Thought The mouse ran across the floor.

Clauses An independent clause has a subject, a predicate, and expresses a complete thought. A dependent clause has a subject and a predicate but does not express a complete thought.

Clauses A sentence must have at least one independent clause. A dependent clause must be joined with an independent clause to form a complete sentence.
