"Marigolds" Analysis paragraphs English 1

How to write an analysis paragraph Choose one theme statement. Make sure that you have text evidence to support it. You will write a thesis sentence as the first sentence of the paragraph. Look through the story for a quote to support your theme statement. Be sure to quote the text word for word and give the page number for your evidence in parentheses!

Thesis sentence Thesis sentence includes theme sentence. Thesis sentence includes a direction. This will be a narrative element. Use a strong verb to connect to your theme. TAG (title and author) in your introduction or thesis sentence. Example: In “Marigolds,” Eugenia Collier displays that theme through her use of narrative element.

Text evidence Text evidence comes after the thesis sentence. Build into your quote. Example: Adult Lizabeth realizes that as a child she recognized poverty had entrapped her and led her to thoughts of destruction. She thinks “…we had some dim notion of what we were, and how little chance we had of being anything else”(19).

Commentary Significance of your quote. Answers “so what?” Also connects back to your theme. Need at least 2 lines of commentary after your text evidence. Use commentary starters from your handout. Now, let’s go through the example paragraph to identify all of the parts!
