Chapter 7 The Electoral Process

5 METHODS OF NOMINATION Self-announcement – write-in candidates dissatisfied with party’s choice. Caucus – process by which party faithful choose the party’s nomination. Convention – pick party’s pres and vice-pres candidates/writes party platform. Direct primary – Intra-party election. Closed or Open. Petition – Certain number of qualified voter signatures required for nomination. Local.

DIRECT PRIMARY CLOSED PRIMARY OPEN PRIMARY A party’s nominating election in which only declared party members can vote. Nominating election in which any qualified voter can cast a ballot.

NONPARTISAN ELECTIONS All or nearly all school and municipal (city) officials chosen in elections where they are not identified by party.
