Joey Schultz and Allie Hayes Quotation Marks Joey Schultz and Allie Hayes

When to use them To quote excerpts of poems or prose Ex. “Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter, in there stepped a stately raven of the saintly days of yore.” (Poe) When using dialogue Ex. Rebecca said “Good Evening, everyone.” To indicate words used ironically, with reservations, or in some unusual way Ex. He had a “normal” look about him.

When to use them (cont.) Titles of short or minor works, such as essays, songs, short stories or poems or one-act plays Ex. “Black Hole Sun” is a popular song by the band Soundgarden. Titles of parts of larger works, such as a chapter in a book or an article in a newspaper Ex. “Jessica’s Story” begins around a coffee table. (From Melody Beattie’s Codependent No More.)

Rules Put punctuation within the quotation marks except for colons and semi-colons Ex. “The couch was on fire after the football game.” (Bob) If you want to alter a quotation use an ellipsis … Ex: “The couch was on fire after the … game.”(Bob) If you want to put words in the middle of a quotation use brackets [ ] Ex. “…[Sheila’s] couch was on fire after the football game.” (Bob)

Rules (cont.) If there is a quotation within a quotation use single marks Ex. “Sheila yelled, ‘Jerks!’ at the couch burners.” Use a comma to introduce a quotation after a standard dialogue tag (e.g. said), a brief introductory phrase, or a dependant clause. Ex. Bob said, “I sat on the flaming couch.”

Bob on the couch

Rule # 7 Place the punctuation outside the closing quotation marks if the punctuation applies to the whole sentence. Ex: Does Mrs. Tully always say “how was the homework”?

Rule # 8 If the quotation is interrupted and then continues in your sentence, do not capitalize the second part of the quotation. Ex. “Um, you could have said that ”, Joey said, “but it would have been confusing.”
