Glass Castle Day 2

Learning Target: Making Text to world Connections in The Glass Castle. Do Now: Write a reflection about the image to the right. What would you think if you saw this family on the street? What kinds of assumptions and judgments would you make? Have you seen families like this before? How do you think they feel? (5 minutes)

Quick Write What is something you found shocking? What statistic stood out to you the most? Why

As you read: Find 4 quotes that describe the way the Walls family lives. Respond to those quotes in a dialogical journal entry.

It Says “Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a small grimy hand reach up a few inches from my face and grab a handful of ice cube. I heard a loud crunching sound and looked down. It was Brian, eating the ice.” I think This illustrates how little the Walls parents take care of their kids. Brian’s hand is grimy indicating that his is rarely washed. He also doesn’t seem to care for his sisters well being since he is eating the ice. My colleague thinks I agree that the Wall’s kids are not taken care of but I don’t think the quote shows Brian doesn’t care. Maybe he is hungry or doesn’t know how to act in a hospital.
