Major Characters Jeannette – (protagonist) Hard working, tough, ends up being successful Rex – (antagonistic) Selfish, but smart, ends up toughening the kids up Rose – Very selfish and lazy, won’t get a job, ruins the childhood of her children Brian – tough, sticks up for his sisters, creates a strong family bond

Major Themes Family role models, like a father and a mother, are very important in shaping a child’s personality, no matter how weird the family is. With out proper family role models, a family can fall apart. Enduring hardships can toughen someone’s personality, but can ruin someone’s life at the same time. It all depends how the person reacts and copes with the hardship Obstacles early in life can make or break family relationships and bonds.

Answers to the Essential Question What role does face obstacles have in shaping an individual’s identity? Facing obstacles toughens personality as shown through Jeannette When facing obstacles, family values/bonds become strong. At a young age, obstacles can cause you to mature at an earlier age. You can develop habits or think a certain way for the rest of your life.
