MAJOR ORGAN SYSTEMS IN THE HUMAN BODY
Presentation transcript:

Integumentary System Major Organs: Skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands Functions: Barrier against infection and injury Helps regulate body temperature Provides protection against UV radiation

Nervous System Major Organs: Brain, spinal cord, nerves Functions: Gathers and interprets information Responds to information

Circulatory System Major Organs: Heart, veins, arteries, blood Functions: Bring oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to cells Remove cell wastes Helps to regulate body temperature

Skeletal System Major Organs: Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons Functions: Protects organs Provides shape and support Allows movement Produces blood cells and stores minerals

Muscular System Major Organs: Cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, skeletal muscle Functions: Allows for movement by contraction Helps circulate blood and move food through the digestive system

Digestive System Major Organs: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small/large intestines, rectum Functions: Take in food (ingestion) Digest food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed and used by cells Eliminate waste

Lymphatic/Immune System Major Organs: White blood cells, thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, lymph vessels Functions: Helps protect the body from disease Collects fluid lost from blood vessels and returns it to the circulatory system

Endocrine System Major Organs: Hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, testes Functions: Regulate body activities using hormones Controls growth, development, and metabolism Maintains homeostasis

Respiratory System Major Organs: Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs Functions: Takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide from the body

Excretory System Major Organs: Skin (sweat glands), kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra Functions: - Remove waste products from the body (urea, water, CO2)

Reproductive System Main Organs: Females – ovaries and vagina Males – testes and penis Functions: Produces reproductive cells In females: nurtures and protects developing embryo
