Rotary’s holistic approach to WATER District Thrust Area Water Management

NEED OF THE HOUR – HOLISTIC APPROACH

WATER MANAGEMENT THROUGH “CPR” Water Conservation “C” Water Purification “P” Water Recycling “R”

Very little focus on recycling ROTARY & WATER Rotary has undertaken different types of project in the space of conservation and purification. Recently, WASH challenge has been launched by RI and India is one of the 5 countries to roll out WASH program on pilot basis Very little focus on recycling

WATER CONSERVATION Drip Irrigation Rain Water Harvesting Creation of water storage structures through DOHA model Roof top harvesting Zero Net Deforestation

INITIATIVES UNDERTAKEN BY ROTARY Rotary has undertaken a major project on Water Conservation through DOHA Model with Rotary Club of Bombay Seacoast. Land & river bed at same level due to siltation Removal of Siltation & making of DOHA Watershed / DOHA post rain SECTIONAL VIEW OF DOHA MODEL

WATER PURIFICATION Rotary has already implemented water purification plants & products with Eureka Forbes as their technology partner with following Clubs: Rotary Club of Bombay Rotary Club of Deonar Rotary Club of Bombay Seacoast Rotary Club of Mira Road Rotary Club of Bombay East These projects were jointly funded by Eureka Forbes & Rotary where Rotary contributed 80% while balance 20% was contributed by Eureka Forbes! Also, to ensure proper sustainability, the project also included Comprehensive AMC for 3 years.

ROTARY’s “SCIENTIFIC” APPROACH Site Surveys for Project Feasibility Collection of Water Samples Based on water test reports, different solutions are recommended: Reverse Osmosis (RO) : It uses membrane technology to remove dissolved salts, impurities and germs from water. The semipermeable membrane separates germs and dissolved chemicals from water. The membrane has very fine pores that allows only water to pass through it leaving behind all the harmful chemical, dissolved salts and microbes suspended in water. It is advisable in the areas where the quality of water is hard and high in TDS. UF (Ultra filtration) purification : It uses membrane similar to RO membranes but with bigger pores. UF membranes essentially removes all colloidal particles including most pathogenic organisms and turbidity but fails to remove the dissolved solids and salts.  UV Purification: It uses ultra-violet light to kill all germs, bacteria, microbes, cysts, etc. in water. This only kills the germs but the bodies of the dead germs remain in the water. Separate filters are required to remove the germs physically. This method is usually done in conjunction with other forms of filtration such as reverse osmosis or activated carbon filters.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS NO ELECTRICITY? APPLICATION OF GRAVITY BASED PURIFIERS These are mostly used in areas where electricity and running water is a challenge! They can serve a maximum user population of 6 to 20 people. Average consumption of water by 100 users is roughly 200 litres per day (assuming 1 user drinks 2 litres/day!). The gravity based purifiers can’t cater to such needs because of flow rate & storage capacity. By increasing the no. of deployments will only increase the maintenance, hygiene risks and needs manual interventions! Hence, we recommend higher solutions for higher population! Aquasure Aayush Plus Aquasure Maxima 4000

Water can be recycled from: WATER RECYCLING Water can be recycled from: Rain water (rain caught from the roof or other direct methods of rain capture),  Storm water (rainwater that has reached the ground or other hard surfaces on the ground like roads, ovals, paddocks) Grey water (from the bath, shower, basin and maybe the kitchen) Treated effluent (from a sewage treatment plant)

WATER RECYCLING

So play your part to conserve water and be water smart!
