Setting Short story Elements

Setting: What elements can a setting include? Establishes both the mood and underlying meaning of a short story. Appeals to the reader’s five senses. What are the five senses? Uses comparisons. What are two ways to compare things in literature? What elements can a setting include?

SETTING Can include: Weather Time (year, month, day, hour, etc.) Place (country, city, town, building, room, etc.) Concrete images (what objects are around?)

What was the setting of “The Pardoner’s Tale”?

TRY IT! With your partner, write a paragraph describing a house for the opening scene of a mystery. Do not include people in your description, although you may show evidence of people (toys on front lawn, music coming from an open window, etc). Appeal to your reader’s five senses. Use comparisons. Create a mood. Be prepared to share.

Mrs. DeGraw’s Paragraph

APPLYING SETTING TO YOUR TALE. Now that you know how to use setting, apply it to your tale. Write at least a paragraph describing the opening setting for your tale that includes: Time Place Weather Concrete images Write another paragraph describing the closing setting for you tale.
