THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY THE WORLD OF GEOGRAPHY THE FIVE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

YOU SHOULD KNOW THESE… Why is geography important? How is geography used? List the 7 continents List the 4 oceans Which two oceans touch the United States?

KEY TERMS GEOGRAPHY LATITUDE PRIME MERIDIAN PARALLEL MERIDIAN DEGREE LONGITUDE EQUATOR EAST-WEST CIRCLES AROUND THE GLOBE 0 DEGREES LONGITUDE, RUNS THROUGH GRENWICH ENGLAND STUDY OF THE EARTH, OUR HOME UNIT OF MEASURE TO DETERMINE ABSOLUTE LOCATION IMAGINARY LINES THAT RUN NORTH TO SOUTH ON THE GLOBE 0 DEGREES LATITUDE ANOTHER NAME FOR LINES OF LATITUDE ANOTHER NAME FOR LINES OF LONGITUDE

Geographers are important because… They analyze the earth from many viewpoints. How earth and people affect one another Oceans, plant life, landforms, people

The Dynamic Duo Geographers are guided by two questions… 1. Where are things located? 2. Why are they there?

The Fab Five! Location Place Human-Environment Interaction Movement Regions The Five Themes of Geography Used by geographers to organize information

Location Location – where something is Two types of location Absolute A places exact position on earth Relative Describing where something is by describing places nearby

Location Absolute Location Also known as a geographic address Identified by using lines of latitude and longitude Latitude: 90 degrees north – 90 degrees south Longitude: 0 degrees – 180 degrees Where is the equator? What two hemispheres does it create? Where is the prime meridian? What two hemisphere does it create?

Location Relative Location explains where a place is by describing places nearby. Example: Swansboro is about 15 miles from Jacksonville.

A quick review What are the four hemispheres of the earth? The United States is located in which hemisphere? The equator creates which two hemispheres? The prime meridian creates which two hemispheres? Lines of latitude measure what? Lines of longitude measure what? What is relative location? Give an example What is absolute location? Give an example

Now that you know all about location…..

We’re moving onto Place!

Place Describes a location’s physical and human features Examples of physical features: Climate is hot or cold Land is hilly Examples of human features: Population of a place What kinds of work people do at this place

Human-Environment Interaction How do people affect their environment Physical characteristics of natural surroundings How environments affects us What would be an example of each?

Human-Environment Interaction Also used to describe consequences of peoples actions Example: Build a canal to irrigate farmland good side: region has more food bad side: irrigation causes salt to build up in soil. farmers must treat soil to get rid of salt food becomes more expensive

Quick Review Place describes which to features of a location? Give an example of each. Give an example of how people in the community affect the following: Air Water Land wildlife

Three down…… Two to go!

Movement Explains how people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another

Regions Regions: used to make comparisons Characteristics of regions: Climate Land Characteristics History U.S. Regions: Coastal Lowlands, Appalachian Highlands, Interior Plains, Rocky Mountains, Western Plateaus, Basins, and Ranges, and Pacific Ranges and Lowlands

Regions On maps, Geographers use: Colors Shapes Special regions All to show regions! A place can be part of several regions at the same time

A look back… What are the Fab Five? (themes of geography) What are regions used for? Explain two ways movement has affected the United States.
