Fractures and Bone Disease What bone(s) have you fractured?

Bone Humour

Types of Fractures Simple fracture Compound fracture Comminuted fracture Stress fracture 3

Simple Fractures - No _______________ of the bone into parts - A ________________is detectable. -a.k.a. hairline or greenstick fracture

Compound Fractures - Occurs when the bone breaks into _______________ pieces. - The _______ can be exposed through skin. - aka “Open fracture” or “transverse fracture”

Comminuted Fractures - Occurs when the broken ends of the _______________into many pieces

What kind of fracture is this? Comminuted fractureo of ulna…..robbery..

What kind of fracture is this? Compound fracture

Stress Fractures Most common in _____________. Muscles become _______________________therefore, stress is placed on the bone. Bone develops a tiny __________________ fracture.

Stress Fractures Causes: ________________________ Cure: Rest:_______weeks with no activity. Returning too soon may result in longer recovery times due to larger stress fracture development.

Symptoms of a Fracture

Bone Healing Bones heal by rebuilding themselves in the same way that they grow – Remember?…if not look at the next slide… Complications occur when there is an infection at the site or if the bone repairs itself but is misaligned – needs to be broken and realigned.

As in this case, fibula fractures are usually not treated unless it involves the ankle joint. Typically intermedullary rods do not cause pain after the tibia is healed and are not removed. Tibia and fibula fractures in an adult followed by surgical fixation with an intermedullary rod.

Fractured acetabulum (adult) due to a motorcycle accident

Surgical fixation of fractured humerus using plate and screws

Bone Disease Range from problems related to:

Bone Disease Osteomyelitis

Bone Disease Rickets = Osteomalacia = Hypophosphatasia =

Bone Disease Osteogenesis Imperfecta Connective tissue (periosteum) is affected -

Bone Disease Kyphosis:

Bones and Aging… Osteoporosis = Porous bones. Degenerative condition that involves low bone mass and deterioration of bones. Post-menopausal women > Risk. Increase susceptibility to bone fracture – especially in hip, spine and wrist.

Osteoporosis…

Preventing Osteoporosis Building strong bones during childhood and adolescence is the best defense. * There is still no cure for Osteoporosis *

Ouch!!!
