New Earth Ceres (asteroid) by Jon Dyer

Ceres - Ceres is the largest asteroid in our solar system - Ceres is so large it is considered as a Dwarf Planet like Pluto

Size (compared to Earth) Ceres’ diameter is 590 miles about the size of Texas Earth’s diameter is 7,918 miles Ceres is large enough to be considered a dwarf planet like Pluto

Surface Composition (compared to Earth) It is believed that due to its spherical shape Ceres’ surface is made up of a mixture of water/ice, carbonates (like limestone or dolomite) and clays.

Distance from the sun (compared to Earth) Ceres is located in our asteroid belt which orbits the sun between Mars and Jupiter

Revolution time (compared to Earth) Ceres make 1 complete revolution around the sun in about 4.6 Earth years 1 Ceres day lasts 9 Earth hours

Temperature (compared to Earth) Earth’s average high temperature is about 15*C Ceres’ average high temperature is about -105* C

Atmosphere Composition (compared to Earth) In 2014 the European Space Agency detected water vapor around the asteroid They think it is coming out of the asteroid at 2 specific spots like icy volcanoes

Gravity (compared to Earth) Earth’s gravity is 9.8 m/s squared Ceres’ gravity is 0.27 m/s squared Thats 2.75% of Earth’s gravitational pull If you weighed 200 pounds on Earth, you would weigh 5 1/2 pounds on Ceres

Presence and Amount of Water (compared to Earth) As discovered on January 22, 2014 by the Herchel Telescope, used infrared waves to determine that Ceres has water vapor around it. Scientist think that it may have an ocean and 2 icy volcanoes. NASA will be sending the Dawn probe that will arrive in 2015 to find out for sure

Cool facts - Ceres gets its name from Greek mythology for the goddess of agriculture (things that grow) - Ceres was discovered in January 1801 by Italian astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi - It was the first object to be considered an Asteroid - Ceres’ mass makes up 1/3 of the total mass of our asteroid belt - NASA probe Dawn is set to visit Ceres in 2015 for further study - Ceres is considered for colonisation due to its abundance of ice, water and minerals
