Understanding Concepts 5. How does the term wellness differ from the term health? Health is a condition of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. Wellness occurs when all of these parts of health are optimal and balanced.

Understanding Concepts 6. What seven things can you do to contribute to good physical health? Eat healthy foods Exercise Get plenty of sleep Avoid harmful substances Practice good hygiene Wear protective sports gear and seat belts Avoid behaviors that could be dangerous.

Critical Thinking 7. You’ve had infectious mononucleosis for a month, and your physical health isn’t as good as it should be. Does your poor physical health have any effect on the other parts of your health? Explain your answer.

Critical Thinking 7. Answer: Poor physical health affects other parts of your health. For example, if you are not feeling well physically, you probably will not want to be around your friends. This hurts your social health. Being tired much of the time will also affect your mental health by preventing you from concentrating on your schoolwork.

Critical Thinking 8. Your friend has learned that her father has an inherited medical condition. She is afraid that she may get it, too. How can your friend become informed about this medical condition? What information could you give her that would help her?

Critical Thinking 8. Answer: You could tell your friend to research the medical condition on the Internet or at the library. You could suggest that she talk to her doctor. You could also explain that just because her father has this inherited disease does not mean that she will get it.
