Year One Welcome Meeting Aim: To provide the information that will help us work in partnership in giving your child a happy, secure and successful experience in Year One.

Staffing Mrs. Boyle and Mrs. Ali are the class teachers. Mrs. Ali will be teaching the children on Monday and Tuesday. Mrs. Boyle will be teaching the children Wednesday to Friday. Miss. Street will be our teaching assistant on Thursdays and Fridays. Miss Todd will continue to work as a specific Learning Support Assistant every day.

Transition There is a significant difference between the Child Initiated Learning approach in EYFS and the content led curriculum of Year One. We will try to make the transition as smooth and positive as possible-still providing opportunities for Activities and plenty of outdoor time and learning. Transition started when the children were in Reception back in July.

Routines Doors open at 8.40am. At 8.50am the door will close at which point your child must enter through the main school door by the office. Departure: Bell goes at 3.15pm- Children are met at the classroom door. Fruit or vegetable snack for morning play. Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle. We have two sessions of P.E. each week and there are lots of other physical activity opportunities. If a child is worried or upset they are encouraged to tell a trusted adult or communicate through the bubble box. Please ensure long hair is tied back and that you notify the school of any spotted head lice! Please ensure your child is wearing the correct uniform and that all items are labelled. Please send any money in a named envelope.

Lunch Orders and Milk Please order your child’s lunch via the Dolce Website. Mrs Sandalls can set you up with a log in. Milk available for a small charge- contact coolmilk

Religious Education We have two hours of R.E each week and are using the Come and See scheme. The children learn about their faith and about how to respond to it as we Live and Learn as Friends of Jesus. The first topic is about families so please could you provide your child with a photograph of their family for our display. Please try to say and discuss the prayers in the St Peter’s prayer book. We pray regularly in school. The children will be participating in assemblies so please come and watch if you can! There will be an occasional home/school link sheet to complete.

Literacy There is a Literacy lesson every day. The children will be introduced to a wide range of stories, poems and information texts and encouraged to respond to them in a variety of ways. Phonic sessions 3 times a week. Show and Tell forms an important part of speaking and listening activities. It will take place on Friday afternoons and your child will receive a letter when its their turn. Please read to your child as often as you can. There will be an opportunity for your child's book to be changed on Mondays Wednesdays or Fridays. Reading comprehension. Please use the reading record to comment on any positive aspects of your child’s reading or to communicate any concerns. Help your child to use the sounds he/she knows to have a go at spelling words and to start to write in phrases or simple sentences. Differentiated spelling words will be sent home every Friday and revisited in the week during lessons. Children will be tested on Friday afternoons. There may occasionally be other homework to complete so please check folders when it comes home.

Phonics Screening The children will take a statutory phonics test at the end of Year One. June 2018 Information sheet included in handouts.

Numeracy There is a Numeracy lesson every day with practical and more formal activities in counting, calculating, measuring and shape and space. Reinforcement at home could include: Counting and writing numbers to 100 and stating the number one more or less than a given one. Counting in twos, fives and tens to the tenth multiple and even beyond! Counting on to add/back to subtract and recording number sentences with the correct symbols. Learning pairs of numbers that make 10 and double numbers to 10 + 10. Telling the o’clock/half hour times, adding coins to 20p (or more) comparing lengths and weights and naming and describing 2D/3D shapes. Finding halves and quarters of shapes and small quantities. The children will be introduced to the web site My Maths and will shortly be sent a log in number so that they can access the site from home. Homework will then be set most weekends to consolidate or extend our work in class.
