Bell Assignment Pick up a pre-assessment Map Quiz from the front of the room and complete it on your own! This is NOT for a grade, this is to see how much you know! When you have completed the map quiz, turn it over and silently review your syllabus (the rules and stuff) until the rest of the class is done.

7 Continents of Earth You will be given a notes sheet to take notes during the short video so pay close attention! https://youtu.be/urr53ar h--E

Continent and Oceans Review

Map Legend and Scale AKA Map Key: A map legend gives you the information you need for the map to make sense. Maps often use symbols and colors to represent things and the legend explains what they mean. A Map Scale lets you know the ratio between distance on the map and distance in the real world.

Longitude and Latitude Longitude lines are the LONG lines going north to south on a map. They measure how far something is east or west of the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is the center line of longitude and is located going straight through the UK, an island of the coast of Europe. Latitude lines are the FLAT lines going east to west on a map. They measure how far something is north or south of the Equator. The Equator is the center line of latitude and is located going straight across the South American country of Ecuador.

Compass Rose A compass rose can almost always be found on a map. It shows the reader the principal directions on a map. This includes Cardinal directions (North, South, East, West) and Intermediate directions (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest)

Practice For the next 15 minutes, you will color your own map, create a legend and, draw a compass and a scale. The colors on your map will correspond to the legend you create. Your scale should show that one inch is equal to 2,263 miles. (If you don’t have a ruler, the distance between your knuckles on your thumb is about an inch)

Ticket Out the Door How do you think this information will be helpful to you throughout the year? Write a paragraph describing what you learned today and how you think it will help you be successful in Social Studies.
