Where are we? In Geography location is determined by using a Grid system created by lines of Latitude and Longitude that cross each other.

Lines of latitude are sometimes called parallels. These lines never intersect with each other.

Lines of latitude go around the earth from east to west.

The most famous line of latitude is call the Equator. Lines of Latitude The most famous line of latitude is call the Equator. The Equator is located at 0° degrees.

Parallels/ Latitude Parallels or lines of latitude circle the earth from east to west, but are used to measure north and south.

Other Lines of Latitude

Lines of Longitude are sometimes called meridians. Lines of Longitude go around the earth from north to south.

The most famous line of Longitude is the Prime Meridian. Lines of Longitude The most famous line of Longitude is the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian is located at 0° degrees.

Longitude/ Meridian Lines of longitude/ Meridians circle the earth from North to south, but measure East and West.

Other Lines of Longitude

Grid system When lines of latitude cross lines of longitude they create a grid. This grid allows us to find specific locations on earth.

Putting It All Together When a line of latitude and a line of longitude intersect it gives us an absolute location.

Putting It All Together We can use absolute location to find exact places on a map or globe. (ex. cities, mountains, and plateaus)
