Introduction to Momentum Monday, November 7, 2016

Monday, 11/7 Unit: impulse and Momentum For each image below describe what is happening, explain how the images are similar and different, and explain how you could apply the concept of momentum. Upcoming dates Note: every day you will have either a HWK check or HWK quiz. Where we’ve been – first section of CNs For each of the concepts below do the following: Use words to describe the concept. Write an equation for the concept Label the variables in the equations and include units. Velocity Acceleration Force How does a force affect acceleration?

Check for understanding You will record your answers on the butcher block paper as a group (rows). As you rotate you will add something to the previous group (example: Group 1, velocity is distance divided by time; Group 2, velocity is different than speed because it has direction (vector vs. scalar). You will continue to rotate until the music stops. When the music stops find a place to update your understandings.

Re-visiting impulse and momentum Read and highlight your CNs. Summarize each section (stop when you get to the example problems) Wait to find your airbag video until we break up to work practice questions.

Example 1 – Momentum of an individual object A 70 kg football player is heading for his opponents end zone at a velocity of 2 m/s. Calculate the football players momentum.

Example 2 – Momentum of a system of objects A 50 kg object is moving at 30 m/s and another object, with a mass of 45 kg is moving at 20 m/s. Calculate the momentum in the system.

Example 3 – Finding final velocity A 4 kg bowling ball rolls down the hall at 8 m/s. A girl swings a broom at it, exerting 40 N of force for 0.5 s in the opposite direction. Calculate the new velocity of the ball.

Practice

Collisions in a system EQ: How does mass, velocity, and direction effect the interaction between objects in a system. In your observations include the following: What variables did you use (mass, velocity) After the collision what happened to the objects (direction and velocity of the individual objects). Describe the motion of the object before and after the collision. Collision simulation 1 Collision simulation 2

Homework If applicable finish your practice problems. You can show me your work for full credit on Tuesday. If applicable finish your collision simulation observations on your CNs

Cool Down On the back of your warm-up write a two sentences summary about impulse and momentum. If the value of momentum for an object is zero what does that tell you about the motion of the object?
