3. Foil A set of characters who are complete opposites Helps to create character development Used to create contrast with characters Often a secondary character who offsets the characteristic from the protagonist Examples: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Percy and Luke, and Ron and Hermonine

E. Round and Dynamic vs Flat and Static Seem real Make changes In the story enough to develop Flat and Static Stereotypical and very shallow Few traits and can be symbolic Limited time in the story so development doesn’t happen Some characters start flat but may become round as the story or series develops (think Ron in Harry Potter)

F. Motivation Motivate means to get to do A force, stimulus, or influence that makes you do something Everyone has a reason for doing something-that is the motivation!!!! Effects everything about the character’s personage and the actions they do- ie motivation can drive the story
