The Gallipoli Campaign 1915: war expands into the Ottoman Empire (Turkey & Middle East) Russia is losing badly on Eastern Front,need supplies (esp. gas masks) Allies want to help Russia but German U-Boats patrol northern seas Allies come up with a plan to supply Russia from the south, through Dardanelles sea strait Ottomans blocking strait, Allies have plan to attack the Dardanelles Allies will be aided by British Empire members Australia & New Zealand (ANZAC) The battle is known as the Gallipoli Campaign

Under the command of Ottoman Colonel Mustafa Kemel, ANZAC struggles at Gallipoli Kemel uses trench warfare – Gallipoli becomes a bloody stalemate, Allies withdraw British encourage Arab Nationalists to revolt against the Ottomans Revolutions hurt Ottomans and give Britain access to Middle East oil Great War Expands to Other Parts of the World Asia: Japan starts attacking German territory in China & Pacific Africa: British & French African colonies attack German African colonies taking three of the four colonies War is expanding, more propaganda is being used Why? 1) Citizens to support them (rationing/war bonds/enlist), 2) neutral countries to join them, and 3) colonial people to join them Many colonies are promised independence if they help
