Presentation transcript:

Gametes (Sex Cells) Not all cells in the organism reproduce through mitosis If the organism reproduces sexually, then it needs special cells Gametes = egg or sperm cells

Meiosis

Meiosis Type of cell division by which gametes (eggs and sperm) are produced. One parent cell produces four daughter cells. Daughter cells have half the number of chromosomes found in the original parent cell After fertilization, new cells of organism have the correct number of chromosomes ½ chromosomes from mom and ½ from dad = 1 complete set of chromosomes in offspring

Meiosis DNA replicates once, but the nucleus divides twice It is like mitosis happens twice… Meiosis 1: Homologous chromosomes separate Meiosis 2: Sister chromatids separate

Meiosis 1 Prophase 1: Each chromosome duplicates and remains closely associated. These are called sister chromatids. Metaphase 1: Chromosomes align at the center of the cell: homologous chromosomes pair up and line up side by side on the metaphase plate Anaphase 1: Homologous chromosome pairs separate with sister chromatids remaining together. Telophase 1: Two daughter cells are formed with each daughter containing only one chromosome of the homologous chromosome pair.

Meiosis 2 Prophase 2: DNA does not replicate. Metaphase 2: Chromosomes line up at the center of the cell (just like in mitosis) Anaphase 2: Centromeres divide and sister chromatids move separately to each pole. Telophase 2: Cell division is complete. Four daughter cells are formed with only ½ the number of chromosomes of the parent cell
