Enlightenment Thinkers Wrap-up discussion The following are quotes by different Enlightenment philosophers that might spark debate or discussion. Some are from the documents we read, some are from the textbook. Discuss/Debate the quotes – what do YOU think about them? Do you agree? What might be the consequences of what these thinkers are suggesting? Why are these quotes revolutionary? Call on each other. Your goal as a class is for as many people to participate as possible.

What do YOU think about these enlightenment ideas? “Everyone has the right to property in his own person…..Government has no other end than the preservation of property….. John Locke and Natural Rights….should “property” be a natural right?

Voltaire – tolerance…..how far should tolerance go? “I do not agree with what you are saying, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Voltaire – tolerance…..how far should tolerance go?

Jean-Jacques Rousseau – the “general will” “Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains” And also… “Society should be governed by the “general will” of the people. Would governing by the “general will” work in society and make people more free?

Will education and the Enlightenment ideals make people more free? Mary Wollstonecraft – reason and education for men and women “A being can not be termed rational or virtuous, who obeys any authority but that of reason.” Will education and the Enlightenment ideals make people more free?
