Worldwide Skills Gap

Network Solutions—New Challenges for Talent Learning@Cisco Charter: Double networking talent by 2012 Remove knowledge gaps as barriers to deployment Enable Cisco, partners, and customers Role of the Network Grows Smart Communities Video Convergence Evolution of the Network Time Web 2.0 Knowledge Gap IP Video, TelePresence Data Center Unified Communications Enhanced Security Wireless This chart shows the challenges facing our customers and partners that drive the need for certification of professional knowledge and experience. Cisco solutions continue to grow in technical complexity, yet the skills and knowledge of customer and partner employees are short of the desired state. Knowledge of networking fundamentals is no longer sufficient. Now, network professionals must understand networking systems with integrated security, wireless, and voice capabilities. New careers in IT are being established that are based more on complex services and architectures than systems. Cisco needs to be leading the charge here to provide direction and proper learning paths and resources to help our customers and partners address these challenges. Economic Environment

Economics of Learning and Certification New global economic conditions exist. Intense competition requires the best human capital for: Greater customer focus Greater productivity per employee Stronger risk management and cost containment Employers need to identify and develop talent. Individuals need to adapt and enhance their value. Nearly everything is being affected by global economic conditions and many of our customers are wondering if they should change or delay their learning and certification plans. Let me share what we see happening with learning and certifications. We see this economic downturn having the effect of intensifying competition and forcing organizations to be more efficient. Companies are working hard to ensure customer satisfaction. Capital shortages are requiring stronger risk management to avoid cost overruns. Employees who’ve avoided layoffs are being asked to take on more responsibility. In short, intense competition drives demand for the best human capital available—to produce higher quality results with less effort and minimal risk. In this environment employers need to identify and develop the talent required to meet these challenges. Individuals need to adapt to a more competitive job market and look for ways to increase their value.

Current IT Operational Environments Skilled, trained IT staff are needed more than ever to maintain availability and improve the efficiency of current installations and older equipment. IT and network design are central in supporting business efficiency and optimization—there will be an increased focus on this in IT operations. Longer life cycles for equipment (4 years) require trained staff to ensure the best utilization and maintenance of equipment. An October 2009 report by IDC focused on changes in the IT operational environment as identified recently by CIOs. Many of the changes caused by the recession are believed to be permanent according to the CIOs. IDC, “Coping with the New Normal- How the Changed Economy is Shaping IT Practices, “ #220285, October, 2009

Investing in Staff

We have found that worldwide organizations are investing in new networking roles. Network Security Voice/ Communications Network Operations Center Wireless Remote Office and Teleworkers Role dedication is increasing. Skills like security, risk, and performance management are emerging as important, regardless of role. Skill requirements are consistent across geographies. 80% 69% 69% 66% 61% Base: 1500 managers in charge of network hiring and training

Certifications are critical to guarantee these skills. Network Security Network Operations Center Wireless Voice/ Communications Remote Office and Teleworkers IT managers cite certifications as important to qualifying new candidates—as well as for their own professional development. Half to three-quarters of IT decision makers expect the importance of certifications to increase. Base: 1500 managers in charge of network hiring and training

Value of Certifications

Certifications Offer Value in Many Ways Screen job applicants Validate the technical acumen of current staff Ensure quality, competency, and relevancy Create a platform for career development Provide credibility and customers Offer recertification to maintain skills “Does my workforce have the ability to deal with the increased pace of change? Do I?”

Role-Based Job Skills Key Findings Career Path and Training Professional and technical certifications play an important part in an IT career.
