Turning a Short Story or Novel Into a Screenplay

Short Story and Screenplay Double Bubble Map

Story to Screenplay STORY I could smell the freshly cut grass outside. Mom was watching the morning news and eating cereal. She told me, “Shae, your dad is working outside today. You and I will clean the house.” Instead of getting some food for myself, I got the broom from the closet and started the day's work. “I'll sweep the kitchen and bathrooms first,” I said.

Screenplay (Shae takes a long sniff while she walks down the hall. Her mother is sitting on a recliner eating cereal while watching the news.) Mom: Shae, your dad is working outside today. You and I will clean the house. (Shae passes the refridgerator and opens the closet. She takes out a broom and starts sweeping.) Shae: I'll sweep the kitchen and bathrooms first.

What are the differences?
