We’re going to visit the Zoo!

A zoo is a place to visit animals from other parts of the world A zoo is a place to visit animals from other parts of the world. The zoo habitat looks like where the animal lives in the wild.

Zookeepers take care of the animals that live at the zoo. They feed the animals and make sure the habitats are clean.

When I come to the zoo, I may enter at one of these entrances.

There may be someone inside the booth that works at the zoo There may be someone inside the booth that works at the zoo. This is the person I pay to get into the zoo.

Most of the animals in the zoo are in the main building.

Don’t Throw Things into the Exhibits Zoo Rules Stay with an Adult Quiet Please No Running No Littering Don’t Throw Things into the Exhibits Don’t Hit the Glass

I might see some birds, like this peacock, walking around outside. I should not feed or chase these animals.

There are two different kind of foxes outside. Arctic foxes are white, and red foxes are red.

I may see leopards outside. This habitat looks like their habitat in the wild. They may be up in the trees, because in the wild leopards like to climb trees. In the wild, these leopards would like in the mountains.

I can look for a an ostrich. They are large and cannot fly I can look for a an ostrich. They are large and cannot fly. They are the largest living bird.

I can look for kangaroos outside. The kangaroos may be hopping around in their habitat. They are herbivores, which means they eat plants.

I can look for Chuck the Groundhog! Chuck predicts the weather every February 2, on Groundhog Day. If he sees his shadow, we will have 6 more weeks of winter.

The Children’s Center is outside. I can see a big barn where some of the animals live. There is also a pond where the ducks swim.

These are called domestic animals, because they are not found in the wild. They can also help people. For example, cows give us milk. I can gently feed these animals if I want to.

The Otter Den Since otters spend a lot of time in the water, they have special fur to keep them warm and dry. The otters spend most of their time in the water. They usually come on land to sleep and rest.

I can see the otters from two different places. I can walk through a tunnel to see them swim underwater!

The Reptile House has many animals. Reptiles are cold-blooded. This means their body temperature is the same as the air. They like to lay in the sun or under special lights to stay warm.

There are lots of snakes in the Reptile House. Snakes have no legs and slither on the ground. They are carnivores, which means they eat other animals.

Tropical Rainforest Inside the Tropical Forest it may be hot and humid, because the real rainforest is hot and humid.

I can look for different kinds of monkeys, birds, bats, and other animals. I can look up high to see animals that live in the trees, or down by the floor to see animals that live on the ground. There may also be birds flying over my head in the aviary. These might get close, but I should not touch them.

Africa Wing I can see animals from the continent of Africa in the Africa Wing.

I will see three lemurs in a tree, because in the wild, they climb trees. Sometimes they make very loud noises! There are different kinds of animals living together in the exhibits. In the wild, these animals would live in the same habitat. These animals would not hurt each other in the wild.

Sometimes, I may see someone holding an animal I can touch. I have to listen closely to the rules the handler gives me.

There are bathrooms inside the building that are open all the time. There are bathrooms outside that are open in the summer.

I can bring my own food like a picnic, or get something to eat at the Zoo Cafe.

There are lots of places both inside & outside where I can eat.
