WHAT IS The Real Impact of The High Cost of Car Insurance

Vehicles for Change Inc Vehicles for Change Inc. (VFC) empowers families, with financial challenges, to achieve economic and personal independence through car ownership and technical training

Twice as many welfare recipients with cars were working than those without cars. 133,500+ low-income households are without cars in Washington metro area. About 25 percent of jobs in low- and middle-skill industries are accessible within 90 minutes (using public transit) for the average metropolitan commuter. Source Brookings Institute

Awarding over 4,500 cars since October 1999 has changed over 15,000 lives. Currently awarding 40 to 50 cars per month.

Recipients 85% single mothers w/ 2-3 children 80% making less than $1,500 per month Monthly insurance cost - $60 to $200 or as much at 15% of their monthly income

The Impact 45 Recipients Surveyed - (owning a car for between 12 and 24 months) 89% still employed! 75% have found a better job and or increased earnings! Average salary increase $7,000 Why are earnings increased? 19 obtained better jobs 14 working more hours and increase hourly rate Having my car also means that I can get Jaylin to his doctor's appointments on time and we can even go somewhere and have fun when we want to! We can have a normal life again and that means a lot to both of us.

Better Employees Family Impact!! 76% attending on the job training and education 66% have reduced tardiness 77% have reduced days missed at work Family Impact!! 100% taking Children to Activities Never Before Possible 87% to after-school and tutoring 87% to athletic activities 81% to art and music 93% went on vacation

Now my three children can go on their first vacation, they do not have to carry groceries on or stand in the cold or rain waiting for the bus. Sincerely, One Happy Family!

Economic Impact - 500 Awards to Low Income Families Employment: On average 75% of the families will see a $7,000 increase in annual gross income, or 2.6M total per year Employers have higher quality and motivated employees Children’s Activities: Approximately 1,250 children will have access to after-school activities, access to day-care, recreation and athletic activities, plus benefits of having parents at home 2-4 additional hours per day Economic Participation: An annual $2.6M boost to the local economy, including savings and taxes Welfare Costs: A decrease in welfare expenditures of $2.5M if just 50% of impacted families leave the state rolls
