Present/Discuss Daily learning Goal: I can read and interpret an excerpt from Ten colloquies and create an analytical response to the piece that describes the way Erasmus uses the text to demonstrate gospel values.

Erasmus – Ten Colloquies Remember: Erasmus was a Northern Humanist from the Netherlands who sought to renew Christian Piety. As you read: Identification questions As you read: Comprehension questions 1. What roles do Polyphemus and Cannius each play in the piece? 2. What gospel messages are revealed throughout the story? 3. What does Erasmus expect of followers of Christianity? 4. Answer Review Questions 1, 3 and 4. 1. What is the book being discussed on the first page? How do they make fun of it? 2. What distinctions does Erasmus make between “living the Gospel life” and “bearing the Gospel”? 3. How does Erasmus bring himself into the story?

Out of Class Writing Assignment Due at beginning of class Wednesday How does Erasmus use the story of Polyphemus and Cannius to describe changes he seeks in the church? Identify 3 examples from the text that are useful in answering the question. For each: Describe ideal characteristics of the church that are identified. Analyze the point that Erasmus makes about religion by using humor – especially parody in the story. Be sure that you have: Thesis statement which makes an argument Organize your response in paragraph format. Type if possible! 
