How to Write a Book Review (and no, it’s not the same thing as a book report!)

What is a book review? It is not a summary OR a book report A book report is a summary of a book (the main events, main characters, theme, etc.) A book review is something completely different!

What is a book review? A book review is an opinion about a book the reader has AFTER they have read it Do any of you know someone who has written a review of a restaurant on Yelp? Writing a book review is the same concept

What do you write about in a book review? The reader’s overall “score” of the book The reader’s opinion including: Their favorite part(s), character(s), quote(s), etc. Their least favorite parts or character(s) in the book What the reader liked/ disliked about the author’s writing style and approach to the story NO SPOILERS!!!

How to get started… Think about how you would describe this book to your friends Your book review should help another person decide if they want to read the book or not

Questions to help you write a book review: Who was your favorite character(s)? Why? Are the characters realistic? Did you relate to them in some way? What was your favorite part of the book? Why?

Questions to help you write a book review: Was there a part of the book that was written really well? Or a part of the book you wish was written in a different way? Did the book grip you and make you not want to put it down? Would you recommend the book to a friend? Why or why not?

How to rate your book 5 Stars: I'm glad I read it or I loved it (this doesn't mean it was your favorite book ever) 4 Stars: I liked it. It was worth reading. 3 Stars: It was okay. 2 Stars: It wasn’t very good. 1 Star: It wasn’t worth reading at all. I did not like it.
