Starter for 5! What does the term ‘predestination’ mean? The idea that God knows everything that will happen in the universe. All-merciful Give a quote that could be used to support fighting in a war. ‘An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’, ‘beat the cutting blades of your ploughs into swords and your pruning hooks into spears’. The Afterlife in Islam Learning Objective: To explore Muslim beliefs about life after death. I can understand how Muslim beliefs about the afterlife affect how a Muslim lives in this life. I can explain Muslim beliefs about the afterlife and the day of judgement. I can apply Muslim beliefs about heaven and hell.

What would they have written down? Your ‘Book of Deeds’ Imagine that angels have been recording all of your actions and words over the past week. All of your ‘good’ actions/words have been written on the right page and all of the ‘bad’ have been written on the left. What would they have written down? E.g. offering to stay after school to help Give students two post it notes and get them to write down a couple of examples – this is anonymous but they don’t have to be too honest! Get students to stick them up on the right and left hand side of the board. Question students here: e.g. how would it make you feel if this happened and would be read out? Would it make you act any differently? Which post it note was easier to fill out? E.g. lying about being late

What does this teach Muslims about responsibility and accountability? Judgement How would Muslim beliefs in the Day of Judgement and Book of Deeds affect the way they live their life? Muslims believe that on the Day of Judgement they will be given new bodies and their ‘Book of Deeds’ will be handed to them to be read out. If people are given the book in their right hand they will go to heaven, if they receive it in their left they will go to hell. How does this link to the concept of justice and God being all-merciful? What does this teach Muslims about responsibility and accountability? Think, pair, share – students to discuss the three questions on the board. Draw out it will mean they will try to be a good Muslim, e.g. pray 5 times a day, give to the poor etc. It also teaches them that from the age of puberty everyone is responsible for their actions and God will hold them accountable. It shows believers that there is fairness and justice, people will not get away with doing wrong actions and will be punished for their wrongdoing. Equally the good will be rewarded.
