Day One: Thursday, January 8, 2015 Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt---As we saw in the Geography Lesson, water scarcity and pollution are also issues for Africa and are not just limited to the Middle East. We are now going to examine one specific controversy----the Aswan Dam.   We are going to do a Reader’s Theatre Activity. I will need students to volunteer for the following roles: Theo Newsman---Host of Point/Counter-Point Ishpi Goud---Egyptian Minister of Public Works and Water Power Carey Land----from Environment Aware As we do the Reader’s Theater on the controversial Aswan Dam, you should be using Active Reading Strategies. Then you will be broken into groups of three or four, and you will use the rest of the reading to examine more in-depth the positive and negative effects of the Aswan Dam.

Day One: Thursday, January 8, 2015 Reflection Questions: What were the purposes/desired outcomes of the Aswan Dam Project? Why?   Identify, explain, and give historical evidence for at least TWO DIFFERENT POSITIVE EFFECTS. Positive Effects---Explanation Historical Evidence Identify, explain, and give historical evidence for at least TWO DIFFERENT NEGATIVE EFFECTS. Negative Effects---Explanation Historical Evidence Considering all of the information, do you think the Aswan High Dam is a success or failure? Why?

Day One: Thursday, January 8, 2015 Class: Have the different groups share their final analysis on the Aswan High Dam. Ask them how has the dam affected the different groups of people socially, economically, etc....Use to transition into the introduction of African Religions and Tribalism.   Class: As the teacher reads aloud the passages below, you should be using Active Reading Strategies.

Day One: Thursday, January 8, 2015 Class: The teacher is going to begin the African Religions PowerPoint Lecture.   For the some of the sections, you will be taking notes in the provided graphic organizer. Animism Christianity Islam Then the rest of the sections, you will be highlighting and adding information to the provided outline notes. Belief in Supreme Being or the High God Beliefs in Spirits and Divinities Ancestor Worship Beliefs in Afterlife Religious Leaders Rituals and Ceremonies Sacrifices

Day One: Thursday, January 8, 2015 Homework: You will be reading and taking notes on African Tribalism from the photocopied supplemental reading. This should be done in EITHER PINK, RED, PURPLE, OR ORANGE PEN to distinguish from the class lecture notes. Chunking: Night One: Thursday, January 8, 2015 Read and take notes in the provided graphic organizer from pages 1-3.

Day Two: Friday, January 9, 2015 Class: The teacher will continue the PowerPoint Lecture on Religions in Africa. You will continue the note-taking process.   Homework: Finish up your Maps of Africa. Work on the Africa Unit Study Guide for the midterm.

Day Three: Monday, January 12, 2015 Individual: You will have the class period to use the CLASS SET of the African Society PowerPoint to add to your reading notes making sure all the categories are complete.   Homework: Work on the Africa Unit Study Guide for the midterm.
